Uganda’s annual inflation rate climbed to 3.5% in the 12 months to April 2025, up from 3.4% recorded in the year ended March 2025 driven primarily by sharp increases in beef prices and rising costs in the services sector.

According to the Consumer Price Index by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), the uptick was largely linked to a rise in annual core inflation, which rose to 3.9% in April compared to 3.6% the previous month.

Samuel Echoku, the head of macroeconomic statistics department at UBOS, said while rice and sugar prices continued to decline, the pace of deflation slowed.

Rice prices fell by 0.8% in April, a slighter drop compared to the 5.5% decrease in March, while sugar prices declined by 10.8%, moderating from a 15.1% slump the previous month.
