President Yoweri Museveni on Friday, September 26, 2025, commissioned the Kiira Vehicle Plant in Jinja District, cementing Uganda’s position as a regional leader in mobility innovation and industrialisation.

The milestone event marks the peak of a visionary journey that began more than a decade ago with the unveiling of the Kiira EV at Makerere University on November 24, 2011, when Uganda made history with Africa’s first electric vehicle.

The state-of-the-art facility is now Africa’s largest and most advanced bus manufacturing plant. It features a complete production line, including a body shop, paint shop, chassis systems shop, trim and assembly shop, a quality inspection and testing shop, and a test track, all supported by a fully equipped design and engineering unit.

Before commissioning the plant, President Museveni was taken on a guided tour by Kiira Motors Corporation CEO Paul Isaac Musasizi.

The event was graced by several senior government officials, including Dr Monica Musenero, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation; Norbert Mao, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs; Matia Kasaija, Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development; and Jacob Oboth Oboth, Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, among others.
