Robert Twesigye scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) salvaged a 1-1 draw against Ndejje University yesterday at the Arena of Visions in Luwero to keep their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals of the Pepsi University Football League alive.

Ndejje appeared to have sealed all three points when Joel Olupot struck in the 85th minute, tapping past goalkeeper Samuel Mukasa after a clever chip from Frank Ssemakula. But IUIU refused to give up and kept pressing until the very end.

Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when they won a corner in the 92nd minute. Emmanuel Shikanga swung in a precise delivery, and Twesigye rose highest to head the ball past Ndejje goalkeeper Fred Ocen, who had been outstanding throughout the game.

The late equaliser sparked wild celebrations from the IUIU bench and travelling fans, while Ndejje players and supporters were left in disbelief as their victory hopes evaporated in the dying moments.

The draw proved vital for IUIU, who would have faced elimination had they lost. For Ndejje, however, it was a bitter pill to swallow, as victory would have taken them top of the group with seven points. They now remain second on five points, level with Kumi University but having played a game more.

Action continues today in Group C, where leaders Kyambogo University host YMCA in Nakawa. Kyambogo will be seeking a third consecutive win to strengthen their position at the top of the table
